Ep. 53: We Are As Gods

Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this installment marks my 53rd episode of "VideoFuzzy," my twice-monthly progress report on cataloging more than 2,800 VHS transfers and digital recordings. In this installment, titled "We Are As Gods," I highlight a short-lived Steven Bochco courtroom cable drama "Raising the Bar," pulling up the pilot episode for my Friday Night Feature.

In Cross Connections, I trace "Studio Six Feet Under" connections from that show through J. August Richards and Teddy Sears, then tracking actors Mark-Paul Gosselaar and J. August Richards' multiple appearances throughout my collection, as well as golden thread represented by Mark A. Sheppard.

In my Classic VHS-to-DVD Collection, I found several fifth-season episodes of "24," along with a few episodes of Monty Python's Flying Circus, featuring some racist language that has not aged well, but also featuring a couple of housewives pondering the human condition culminating in a visit to Jean-Paul Sartre, so these guys, you gotta take the good with the bad. Also, Tom Cavanagh in "Love Monkey" and The Daily Show's spoof of the Obama intro video at the 2008 DNC.

Then, as the title reference for this entry, I found Tom Lenk as Andrew Wells in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," the seventh season episode "Storyteller," a scrap of video featuring The Trio dancing about in Elysium fields with gold and a unicorn singing "We Are As Gods." I took a run at recreating that here, and in all modesty .. nailed it. :D

In my Nerd Shows, my Classic Collection also turned up an episode in a History Channel science series called "Evolve," tracking the evolution and adaptation of skin across so many millions of years and species. Fascinating.

In my direct-to-DVD Current Collection, I discuss the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards, "Pose," "Preacher," "Claws" and "A Million Little Things." Samantha Bee highlights expanded reproductive services provided at clinics in southern states to expand public support.

In VideoFuzzy at the Movies, I touch on broadcast presentations of "I Now Pronounce you Chuck and Larry," "Dragonwyck," "I Wake Up Screaming," "The Bishop Murder Case," "Hangover Square," "Spider-Man: Homecoming," "The Bone Collector" and "The Perfect Guy," as well as "Sweet Charity," "Steel Magnolias" and "Woman Times Seven," featuring Shirley MacLaine and Peter Sellers. Finally, I encountered the Turner Classic Movies presentation of Vanessa Redgrave and Dustin Hoffman in 1979's "Agatha," exploring the real-life disappearance of queen of crime Agatha Christie. I first heard about that intriguing little speculation on the "All About Agatha" podcast by Kemper Donovan and Catherine Brobeck, and you can check that out here.

In What I've Been Watching, Ralph and I recently finished watching all episodes of "Polar Bear Cafe" on Crunchyroll, and in upcoming shows, we'll be taking in the Fargo-Moorhead Community Theater production of Michael Frayn's "Noises Off!" They do a great job and I'm very much looking forward to that.

Ep. 52: Metaphysical Zoological Hallucinations

Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this installment marks my 52nd episode of "VideoFuzzy," my twice-monthly progress report on cataloging more than 2,800 VHS transfers and digital recordings. In this installment, titled "Metaphysical Zoological Hallucinations," (following some spoiler-y corrections on "Claws"), I highlight a half-dozen episodes from Aaron Sorkin's "The West Wing," archived from a fan-voted top ten episode Labor Day 2004 marathon on Bravo as part of the series' syndication on that channel.

In Cross Connections, I trace "Studio Six Feet Under" connections from a collection of movies that aired on FXM Retro and which I pull up for comment under "VideoFuzzy at the Movies," including "Journey to the Center of the Earth," "Wizards," "The Man Who Wouldn't Die," "23 Paces to Baker Street," "Quintet," "11 Harrowhouse," "Mister 880," "Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?" and "The Third Secret," highlighting Ed Begley Jr's multiple appearances throughout my collection, as well as appearances by Laurie Metcalf, Jason Manzoukis, Mark A. Sheppard and Barry Corbin.

In my Classic VHS-to-DVD Collection, I talk about a few "West Wing" episodes I tracked down in my back catalog in preparing for my feature commentary, archive recordings of speeches by Joe Biden and Barack Obama at the 2008 Democratic National Convention, including an unfortunate camera mishap involving a streamer cannon. Also, comments on Monty Python's Flying Circus royal episode, Monk prop issues and Simpsons meme synchronicity.

In my direct-to-DVD Current Collection, comments on the series finale of "Legion," as well as "Preacher," "Pose," "Pearson," "Archer 1999" and I listed out the menagerie they pulled in for a fun little [adult swim] bumper headed "Metaphysical Zoological Hallucinations," including the Motaur by Progressive, Gritty the hockey mascot, a cutie cthulie (an octupus) and a platypus, which they caption a "weirdo duck." Fun!

In VideoFuzzy at the Movies, I highlight Bravo's presentation of "La La Land," comments on the FXM Retro movies I listed up there under Cross Connections, and a comment on the late Peter Fonda. Finally, in Upcoming Shows, Comedy Central is airing third season episodes of "BoJack Horseman." Enjoy!

Ep. 51: A Night in SubUrbia

Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this installment marks my 51st episode of "VideoFuzzy," my twice-monthly progress report on cataloging more than 2,800 VHS transfers and digital recordings. In this installment, titled "A Night in SubUrbia," for my Friday Night Feature I talk about a comic British teen drama that turned up on disc 711 in my Classic Collection called "Skins," the show's second-ever episode, centered on Cassie, a teen girl with an eating disorder.

In Cross Connections, I trace "Studio Six Feet Under" connections from "Skins" through "Game of Thrones" and "Dark Phoenix," Colin Farrell to a Capitol Shakespeare production I got to and "Parks and Rec" to "Superstore," "The Simpsons," "Brockmire" and 2020 presidential campaign efforts.

In "Into the Vaults," I watch a commercial VHS copy of "SubUrbia" that's been sitting unwatched in my media collection since about 2010, highlighting heretofore unexplored portions of my media collection.

In my Classic VHS-to-DVD Collection, I encountered "Battlestar Galactica's" pilot episode, noting the absence of the beautiful Sanskrit chant in the opening sequence for that one, highlighting similarities between my discovery of this series and my discovery of the 2002 Labor Day FOX marathon presentation of "24." Finding that episode gave me hope I'll find the pilot episodes of "The Middleman" and "Commander in Chief." Also, comments on "Psych," "Criminal Minds" and the "Raisin Brahms" Americans for the Arts promo.

In VideoFuzzy at the Movies, comments on Kids in the Hall "Brain Candy," "A Night at the Roxbury," "Napoleon Dynamite," John Waters' 2007 production of "Hairspray," "Bee Movie," "The Full Monty," "Solace," "The Girl on the Train" and "Gone Girl."

In my direct-to-DVD Current Collection, I've archived and cataloged all seven seasons of "Parks and Rec," noting the frustrating absence of the Funniest Line Ever Delivered in a Situation Comedy. Also, comments on "Pearson," "Archer: 1999," "Pose," "Claws," "Legion," "Psych" and "Full Frontal," featuring Samantha Bee and her Wacky Lists of Things! In Nerd Shows, I dedicated a disc to three two-hour PBS presentations of Roger Smith's "American Experience: Chasing the Moon," that production timed to observe the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Mission.

In What I've Been Watching, I took in Capitol Shakespeare's production of "The Winter's Tale," and in Upcoming Shows, looking forward to "Preacher" and this fall's season of Bravo's "Project Runway" remix featuring Christian Siriano. Enjoy!

Ep. 50: Ruddy Clip Show

Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this installment marks my 50th episode of "VideoFuzzy," my twice-monthly progress report on cataloging more than 2,800 VHS transfers and digital recordings. In this installment, titled "Ruddy Clip Show," I combine a fond look back at past episodes along with thoughts on my current viewing, opening with comments on the third season premiere of "Legion" in my Friday Night Feature.

In my Classic VHS-to-DVD Collection, a shoutout to the 50th anniversary of Monty Python's Flying Circus along with some fun discoveries, including "Election Night Special," school awards presentations and close order swanning about. Also, comments on "Saving Grace," "South Park" and "The Simpsons."

In my direct-to-DVD Current Collection, a Pride Month celebration of "the other" in basic cable presentations, including "Pose," "Claws" and "Good Behavior," comments on fifth season episodes of "Luther" and, expanding on a recent episode of "Pose," a public service announcement regarding proper sex dungeon etiquette.

In VideoFuzzy at the Movies, I chat about "Dark Phoenix," "Logan" and M. Night Shyamalan's "The Visit." Finally, true to the episode title, I highlight the progress I've made in this effort with clips from past shows. Enjoy!
