Ep. 59: VideoFuzzy at the Movies: "Knives Out"

Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this installment marks my 59th episode of "VideoFuzzy," my twice-monthly progress report on cataloging more than 2,800 VHS transfers and digital recordings. This installment, titled "VideoFuzzy at the Movies: 'Knives Out,'" shifts from my usual cataloging efforts and commentary for a spoiler-free review of "Knives Out," which I have elsewhere described as one of the best movies I have seen in years, possibly ever.

"Knives Out" features Christopher Plummer as Harlan Thrombey, 85, prolific author of murder mysteries, his lifeless body discovered early one morning by his maid. The case is initially ruled a suicide, but Daniel Craig as world famous private investigator Benoit Blanc isn't so sure, and a seething pack of would-be heirs -- family, staff and companions -- do little to allay his suspicions!

With endless plot twists, questions of who-knew-what-when and constantly shifting alliances -- all set in a museum-piece mansion riddled with secret passages and twistier than a Rubik's cube -- "Knives Out" comes highly recommended. Go see it. It's completely worth it and one hell of a good time.

Ep. 58: Trips to the Past

Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this installment marks my 58th episode of "VideoFuzzy," my twice-monthly progress report on cataloging more than 2,800 VHS transfers and digital recordings. In this installment, titled "Trips to the Past," I wax nostalgic as music playing at the City Brew takes me back. For my Friday Night Feature, I take a long, hard look at a second-season episode of "Primeval."

In Cross Connections, I track "Studio Six Feet Under" connections for "Primeval," including its ties with "The Crown." I track connections from Jessalyn Gilsig from "Nip/Tuck" to "Glee" and "Heroes." Also, Donal Logue from the second season premiere of "Life" takes me to the IMDb credit of friend of the podcast Heather Welliver.

In my Classic VHS-to-DVD Collection, I talk about the fifth season premiere of "The Office," Homer gets a PC in a 12th season episode of "The Simpsons," a fifth season episode of "Boston Legal," second season episode of "Mad Men" and the second season premiere of "Chuck."

In my direct-to-DVD Current Collection, comments on community access cable presentations including the visit by Swedish teen activist Greta Thunberg to Standing Rock Reservation south of Bismarck, a short history of the rail bridge crossing the Missouri River between Bismarck and Mandan, and Sean Gaskell playing the West African kota. Also, a profile called "Shadowcatcher" on Bismarck photographer Shane Balkowitsch by University of Mary student filmmaker Phillip Litton. Also, comments on "Superstore" and "The Good Place."

In VideoFuzzy at the Movies, comments on the FX presentation of "The Kingsman: The Golden Circle" and the TNT presentation of "The Imitation Game" starring Benedict Cumberbatch as cryptanalyst Alan Turing. And in What I've Been Watching, a spoiler-y commentary on McKellan and Mirren in recent release "The Good Liar." Enjoy!

Ep. 57: Cutting that LVAD Wire

Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this installment marks my 57th episode of "VideoFuzzy," my twice-monthly progress report on cataloging more than 2,800 VHS transfers and digital recordings. In this installment, titled "Cutting that LVAD Wire," I feature Alan Ball's HBO project "True Blood."

In Cross Connections, there's no "Studio Six Feet Under" competition on "True Blood," given "Six Feet Under" series creator Alan Ball's direct connection. Rather, I traced connections from a couple significant episodes of "Boston Legal," Kurt Sutter productions "The Shield" and "Sons of Anarchy," "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles," "Rescue Me" and "Monk," and I premiere a Golden Thread segment with Dean Norris, tracking his appearances in shows throughout my collection.

In my Classic VHS-to-DVD Collection, I found a pivotal episode of "Grey's Anatomy" along with comments on the series finale of "Dead Like Me," the 2006 Amnesty International fundraiser "The Secret Policeman's Ball," the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, the 2008 Emmy Awards, "The Office," "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip," the Spanish Inquisition pops up in "Monty Python's Flying Circus," and from "The Daily Show," in Jon Stewart's Wacky Lists of Things, I break down the "network of gay staffers" conservatives were attributing as somehow responsible for Rep. Mark Foley's allegedly untoward texts and emails to young male pages.

In VideoFuzzy at the Movies, I ran into copies of "Fracture" and "Michael Clayton" in my Classic Collection, and from my Current Collection, I chat about H.G. Wells' 1936 "Things to Come," which aired on community access.

In my direct-to-DVD Current Collection, comments on "Bob's Burgers," "Superstore," "The Good Place," "Supernatural," "American Horror Story 1984," "Will & Grace," "Cake" and Twitter teases involving "Perfect Harmony" and "Doctor Who."

Finally, in What I've Been Watching, some thoughts on the fourth season premiere of "Mr. Robot." Enjoy!

Ep. 56: Embrace the Deception

Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this installment marks my 56th episode of "VideoFuzzy," my twice-monthly progress report on cataloging more than 2,800 VHS transfers and digital recordings. In this installment, titled "Embrace the Deception," I feature the series premiere of FOX's thought-provoking if wackadoo series "Fringe."

In Cross Connections, I pull up "Studio Six Feet Under" connections from "Fringe" and the many guest stars I encountered closing out the final three seasons of "Psych."

As of Oct. 23, 2019, I had completely cleared out my DVR!
In my Classic VHS-to-DVD Collection, I found a copy of where a North Dakota family in need got some help from the "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" team. I also found episodes of "True Blood," a copy of "Becket" off Turner Classic Movies, and the second season premiere of "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles."

In my direct-to-DVD Current Collection, as well as a disc set and some video streaming, I closed out my Dark Ages episodes of "Psych" from the sixth through the eighth season, including "Psych: The Musical," which I had to purchase separately -- totally worth it. Also, comments on "Superstore," "Supernatural," "American Horror Story 1984," "Cake" and "The Good Place," plus it would appear that I did, however briefly, manage to clear out my DVR, so ... whoohoo!

Ep. 55: The Art of Failure

Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this installment marks my 55th episode of "VideoFuzzy," my twice-monthly progress report on cataloging more than 2,800 VHS transfers and digital recordings. In this installment, titled "The Art of Failure," I feature the series premiere of Kurt Sutter's FX biker drama "Sons of Anarchy," which I thought got the show off to a good start.

In Cross Connections, I pull up "Studio Six Feet Under" connections from a realization that Ally Walker was the actor I misremembered in the third season of "Sons of Anarchy," and ties tracing through my collection from her '90s crime drama "Profiler." Also, I trace connections through HBO documentary "The Art of Failure: Chuck Connelly Not For Sale." And in Old Business, I explore the inclusion of a scene from the pilot episode of Kurt Sutter's FX crime drama "The Shield" in an episode of the third season of Noah Hawley's mindbending production of "Legion."

In my Classic VHS-to-DVD Collection, I rave about an HBO documentary that turned up in my collection called "The Art of Failure: Chuck Connelly Not For Sale." Also, scenes from the 2008 GOP convention, compared and contrasted with sixth season episodes that turned up of "The West Wing," episodes of "Medium," "Will & Grace," "Dead Like Me," "Monk," "My Name is Earl," "Boston Legal," "The Office," "30 Rock," "Criminal Minds," and the fun 2002 blaxploitation film "Undercover Brother."

In my direct-to-DVD Current Collection, comments on movies I archived including "Rough Night" and the Burton/Schumacher "Batman" franchise, then the CW productions of "Batwoman" and "Nancy Drew" (pass); some discussion of the series finale of "Preacher," season premieres of "Superstore" and "The Good Place," the Syfy miniseries "Channel Zero: Candle Cove," "AHS: 1984" on FX, and the 15th season premiere of "Supernatural." I pass on "Perfect Harmony" and "Bless the Harts," with comments on the third season of "BoJack Horseman," the 10th season premiere of "Bob's Burgers," the FXX premiere of "Cake" and sixth season episodes of "Psych."

Ep. 54: The Palindrome Parallax Paradox Podcast

Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this installment marks my 54th episode of "VideoFuzzy," my twice-monthly progress report on cataloging more than 2,800 VHS transfers and digital recordings. In this installment, titled "The Palindrome Parallax Paradox Podcast," I feature the series finale of short-lived ABC Family comic book-inspired series "The Middleman" for my Friday Night Feature, "The Palindrome Reversal Palindrome" and discuss my interest in comic books and graphic novel-inspired media.

In Cross Connections, I trace "Studio Six Feet Under" connections from "The Middleman," as well as connections from the third season of "Eureka" and the 1940 production of "Gaslight" to the 1948 production of "The Red Shoes."

In Old Business, I pull up the closing scenes of the pilot episode of "Raising the Bar" I featured in Episode 53: We Are As Gods, a few moves I called and a few I'd completely forgotten.

In my Classic VHS-to-DVD Collection, I talked about a first season episode of "Prison Break," a fourth season episode of "Nip/Tuck" and a first season episode of "30 Rock" that all turned up recently.

In Crowdsourcing, research continues but breakthroughs thus far prove elusive on Exhibit E, a piece of sketch comedy, some screen caps posted here. Any tips, hints or leads are greatly appreciated.

In my direct-to-DVD Current Collection, some discussion on "Pearson" and "Suits" as well as "Preacher." Also, looking at a few eyecatching commercials, an Audi commercial makes me feel pretty good about what I've heard about the new 007.

In VideoFuzzy at the Movies, I talk about the FX production of Spike Lee's "Summer of Sam" (1998), and I take the opportunity to trace connections from the 1971 production of "The Zodiac Killer," including to Nightstalker reporter Carl Kolchak, highlighted in a couple of my favorite episodes of the Forgotten TV podcast you can find here and here.

In What I've Been Watching, I comment on episodes of "Straight Up Steve Austin" on USA, which drew my attention to his podcast, David Spade's "Lights Out" on Comedy Central and "Supermarket Stakeout" on the Food Network. Finally, Ralph and I recently took in the FMCT's amazing production of Michael Frayn's "Noises Off!"

In Upcoming Shows, looking forward to finally seeing the ninth season of "American Horror Story: 1984," a little bit of FXX weirdness in the series premiere of "Cake," and season premieres of "Superstore" and "The Good Place." Also, BBC America is observing the 50th anniversary of "Monty Python's Flying Circus" by airing first-season episodes Sept. 29. And shoutouts to Geek Radio Daily and Forgotten TV podcasts. Enjoy!
