Ep. 81: Tell Me What You Don't Like About Yourself

Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this installment marks my 81st episode of VideoFuzzy, reporting the progress I've made in cataloging more than 3,000 VHS transfers and digital recordings. For this installment, titled "Tell Me What You Don't Like About Yourself," in my Fuzzy Feature, I talk about third-season episodes of Ryan Murphy's "Nip/Tuck" leading up to the third-season finale and reveal of The Carver story arc. A plot point in that set of episodes traced Matt's dating life with a transsexual and a racial purist, and Julia's pregnancy with Conor. I found a photo taken of me at the exact moment Julia emerged from the examination room and her decision to carry Sean's baby to term – that scene, having been recorded to disc 1285, quite by chance marked the midpoint of my Classic Collection.

me holding disc 1285 and photo from 2005

Wow.

And since it's been quite a while, I detailed the philosophy behind my "Studio Six Feet Under" challenge, highlighting these productions – Alan Ball's "Six Feet Under" and Aaron Sorkin's "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" – as the mystical centers of my media collection, noting the synthesis of the those energies in Ryan Murphy's "American Horror Stories" – particularly the focus on death and reality television in season six – and other emergent centers, but those two remain solid.

Cross connections through Dylan Walsh and Julian McMahon, Bruno Campos, Roma Maffia and Gregory Itzen, K Callan, as well as guest appearances throughout Nip/Tuck, Alec Mapa, Mary Gross, John Goodman, Dixie Carter, Delta Burke and Jean Smart, plus Jayma Mays who appeared in both "Studio 60" and "Six Feet Under," and in Golden Thread, I track appearances by John Billingsley.

In my Classic Collection (VHS-to-DVD) I find a disc with episodes from both "Studio 60" and "Six Feet Under," including a follow-up on the appearance of Mary Gross in "The Trip" I mentioned back in episode 67, and John Goodman's appearance as a judge in Pahrump, Nevada in the "Nevada Day" two-parter. I talk about the use of blackface in a third season episode of "Mad Men" at a Derby Day party set in 1963, and other appearances in media, society and politics up through today. Comments on "Veronica Mars," "Hustle," "3 Lbs.," "Medium," the Lincoln Meyer episode of "Boston Legal" and I go into some detail on "Criminal Minds" and "Grey's Anatomy."

Also, I found three tiny clips less than a second long that look like they were commercials overwritten with scenes from a second season episode of "Prison Break." One looks like it's from a car commercial. I posted them on my media sites and you can take a look. I don't really have any information about them, but if they look familiar, I'd love to know. Thanks!

clips from overwritten media

In my Current Collection (direct-to-DVD), I archived the State of the Union Address, and historian Heather Cox Richardson's interview with President Biden. Also, the first season of "We Baby Bears," some "Kids in the Hall," "Doctor Who" and "Better Call Saul."

In What I've Been Watching, I took in a high school stage production of "The Book of Will," a community theater production of "See How They Run," and such movies as Robert Pattinson in "The Batman" and Kenneth Branagh's production of Agatha Christie's "Death on the Nile."

Our host for the "Book of Will," my friend Kirk Nybakken, reminded me during intermission of our 2005 production of another Agatha Christie production, "Towards Zero" in which he'd played Neville Strange and I'd taken on the role of ancient barrister Mathew Treves. He recalled our Inspector Battle, Troy Madl, taking sick one night and his constable, Les Younger, heroically stepping into the Detective Inspector Battle role to get us through the final reveal. I reminded Kirk of the night I'd forgotten my lines at a critical moment and he had to cue me in character to get us through to the finale. Couple of serious day-savers!

Well, I was reminded of all of that while putting this together because Troy had been couch-surfing at my place while the "Towards Zero" was going on and his quick thinking resulted in that photo of me reacting to that moment in "Nip/Tuck."

Thank you Troy, and thank you Kirk, for that fun trip down memory lane.

And on the topic of Christie-related memories, I got some nice feedback from Kemper Donovan of the "All About Agatha" podcast regarding my "At Bertram's Hotel" entry around the 25-minute mark of episode 76, "Building a Mystery."

I posted my 10th ever "VideoFuzzy: The Video" installment at https://youtu.be/vu_HaYaiOAk with comments from my Fuzzy Feature and the backstory on that photo. This will likely mark my signoff for those entries. They're fun to put together, but unless something really demands a visual component, I think my audio-only format should be just fine. The audio availability will continue on YouTube and wherever you get your podcasts.

And this will likely be my last regular entry for a while. With out-of-town adventures and friends visiting from overseas, it has taken more than two months to put this one together despite my very best efforts. I just need to take a break, focus on some life stuff and oh yeah, plow through a BUNCH of media piled up on my Midco box.

I've been making semi-regular submissions since I started this project 80 episodes ago in June of 2017 with disc 229, cataloged through disc 1300 with a deep-dive bringing in my entire backlog with episode 10. It'll be a good break, but we're not talking years. I've still got this uncharted collection of media to go through and I absolutely want to get through it and talk about it. In the meantime, explore my back catalog, click through my blog, and if there's anything you'd like more information about, please let me know.

Ep. 80: F is for Fiasco

Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this installment marks my 80th episode of VideoFuzzy, reporting the progress I've made in cataloging more than 3,000 VHS transfers and digital recordings. For this installment, titled "F is for Fiasco," in my Friday Night Feature, episodes of "Close to Home" spark an unexpected connection with an appearance by Austin Tichenor, host of the Reduced Shakespeare Company podcast.

In Cross Connections, in my "Studio Six Feet Under" challenge, I trace Austin Tichenor's appearances within a step of mystical centrality in my media collection. Also, Jeff Perry appears as a Golden Thread through a lot of the media I grew up watching and throughout my media collection. Also, appearances by Laurie Metcalf, Josh Hopkins, Carrie Preston and Bruno Campos. I don't break out a Fond Reflections this time because 2022 has been brutal, but I encountered a Bob Saget reference in a season 14 episode of "The Simpsons."

In my Classic VHS-to-DVD collection, discussion of "Blind Justice," "Defying Gravity," "The Universe," "Mad Men," "Drop Dead Diva" (with quick aside to Season 19 of "Project Runway,") "Nip/Tuck," "The West Wing" and "The Comedy Central Roast of Pamela Anderson." Also, a song by Alabama3 featured in the BBC's "Being Human."

In my Current direct-to-digital collection, discussion of title inspiration for this installment, Orson Welles' 1973 documentary "F is for Fake." I talk about "Trance," "The Dark Half," "The Magician," "Gone," "In Cold Blood" and "Badlands." I include a compare-and-contrast of the 1947 and 2021 releases of "Nightmare Alley." Comments on "Doctor Who," "Looper" and "Naomi." Also, I talk about "4400" with breakout commentary on the 2009 reboot of "V" and the 2017 reboot of "Murphy Brown."

In What I've Been Watching, I talk about Joel Coen's Apple TV presentation of "The Tragedy of Macbeth," I run into Lauren Kristy, Live and Linkin Park songs in my iTunes catalog. Shoutout to my friend Mikey Heinrich for the heads up on the opening sequence to HBO Max's "The Peacemaker" at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mrr3UNALww - OMG. Definitely added Wig Wam's "Do You Really Wanna Taste It" to my playlist. Also, block out the time and watch ROFL Audio's "Ultimate James Bond Medley" at https://youtu.be/SeYfAmz0Jlk, it's amazing.

My By the Numbers segment includes a breakdown of the process in putting these things together, and a show so far milestone 3,000 homeburned DVDs!

Finally, a link to my ninth installment of "VideoFuzzy: The Video" with comments from my Friday Night Feature and a show so far with my By the Numbers segment: https://youtu.be/5y_z-XBWWLY

Ep. 79: The Play's the Thing

Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this installment marks my 79th episode of VideoFuzzy, reporting the progress I've made in cataloging nearly 3,000 VHS transfers and digital recordings. Wishing everyone a safe and healthy 2022! For this installment, titled "The Play's the Thing," in my Friday Night Feature I talk about show-within-a-show plot points I encountered in "Leverage," "Burn Notice," "The Closer," "Monk," "Hung," "In Plain Sight," "The Simpsons," "Drop Dead Diva" and "Better Off Ted," and their place and use in productions.

In Cross Connections, I explore K. Callan's appearances as a Golden Thread through a lot of the media I grew up watching and throughout my media collection, and representing the tightest connection I've found so far to "Knives Out" through Frances Conroy in "Remington Steele" and Ed Begley Jr. in "St. Elsewhere" to "Six Feet Under," binding quite a few shows to the mystical center of my media collection in my "Studio Six Feet Under" challenge. I also noted Justina Machado in the "One Day at a Time" reboot puts every Norman Lear production also one step removed from "Six Feet Under." And K Callan's involvement in several shows featured in Chris Cooling's podcast "Forgotten TV" gave me a great opportunity for a quick shoutout to that excellent production.

Other connections I talk about in my Classic Collection discussion include Christine Baranski's appearance in "Psych" with the more usual recurring character of Cybill Shepherd in "Cybill." Also, John Schneider's appearances in "Dirty Sexy Money," "Nip/Tuck" and "Leverage," and connections through "The Closer," "Cougar Town," "Drop Dead Diva" and "Rescue Me."

In Fond Reflections, together with the loss to the world of Betty White, I extend my deep condolences to the "All About Agatha" podcast team, with the sudden passing of cohost Catherine Brobeck, celebrating her contributions in superlative discussion, debate and insights into the vast majority of mystery novelist, Queen of Crime Agatha Christie's body of work, and all the best to Kemper Donovan in the wake of the devastating loss of his friend and cohost in this more than five year journey. It was so good to have this too brief acquaintance.

In my Classic VHS-to-DVD collection, discussion of dustups on "Rescue Me," additional cross connections, a screen capture of cool art I saw in "Burn Notice" I posted to VideoFuzzy's Instagram account, a clip from Portishead's "Only You" in the cold open for "Warehouse 13," and the Comedy Central Roast of Joan Rivers.

Also, tracking the car crash I foreshadowed a couple episodes back, documenting some weirdness I encountered in hopping from Binder No. 6 to Binder No. 7 – a blank disc, two copies of disc 1241 (now marked 1241-1 and 1241-2), and the odd displacement of Disc 1449, now exhaustively documented among this latest installment of "History's Most Boring Mysteries."

In my Current direct-to-digital collection, discussion of "Doctor Who: Flux," exploring Weeping Angels, Division, an Ood, the Mad Mole of Liverpool, a snake alien involved from the earliest beginnings of UNIT, and at the center of it all, a tri-phasic Doctor and her team with chameleon arch tech, a grumpy doggo, a planet called Time, the Temple of the Mora and a confrontation with the Vanquishers while a Gallifreyan scientist tries to destroy the universe from outside of it.

Also, commentary on "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind," "Queens," "Live in Front of a Studio Audience: The Facts of Life and Diff'rent Strokes" and the 2002 Bruce Willis movie "Bandits" featuring Tanita Tikaram's "Twist in my Sobriety."

And in What I've Been Watching, Ralph and I have been watching "My Hero Academia," and we recently took in the prequel installment, "The King's Man." Fun show.

Ep. 78: Nobody Does It Better

Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this installment marks my 78th episode of VideoFuzzy, reporting the progress I've made in cataloging nearly 3,000 VHS transfers and digital recordings.

For this installment, titled "Nobody Does It Better," in my Friday Night Feature I talk about James Bond opening sequences from "Dr. No" to "No Time to Die" -- then force a bot to write one! I track Bond film connections throughout my media collection, and in Fond Reflections, I celebrate the life of Stephen Sondheim.

In my Classic Collection (VHS-to-DVD transfers), I've cataloged through disc 1,225. Comments on the "Harper's Island" finale, a documentary on diplomat and former Minot resident Herro Mustafa in "American Herro," when bad shows happen to great actors, and the "Torchwood: Children of Earth" miniseries.

In my Current Collection (digital recordings), comments on Season 13 of "Doctor Who," the "4400" reboot, streaming "Only Murders in the Building," "Hamilton," "WandaVision," also "American Horror Stories Double Feature," a few musical items including a Queen + Adam Lambert documentary, songs by Missy Elliott, Britney Spears and Ghost, and an Austin City Limits concert with John Batiste. Edward Montez in a local commercial along with other cool commercials for DirecTV and Progressive Insurance and biography entries on legends Lucille Ball and Elizabeth Taylor. Additional spoiler-y comments on the "SurrealEstate" finale and the premiere of ABC's "Queens."

In what I've been watching, comments on Dakota Stage Limited's production of Jason Robert Brown's musical "The Last Five Years." Powerful performances. A request to see if anyone can access this podcast through my VideoFuzzy Facebook page -- it should be available for mobile users, but might be tough to find if you're not actually moderating the page.

And between the production and the video and the song, this one got pretty involved. So if you're enjoying this, please take a moment to rate and review my podcast, and if you know of anyone who might enjoy it, please tell a friend. Thanks!

Finally, a link to my #007th installment of "VideoFuzzy: The Video," talking about James Bond openers: https://youtu.be/56nQdsvRcdQ - check it out! And have a safe and wonderful holiday season!
